Ang Hang

Some 20 years ago, Ang Hang Restaurant opened its doors at Sunvar Plaza on Pasay Road in Makati to the delight of lovers of spicy food in the metropolis. Soon, it became the favorite lunch and dinner meeting place of foodies, celebrities, Makati’s top executives, political figures and ladies who simply lunched. Ang Hang’s chefs tirelessly prepared all the spicy dishes, which set the diners’ palates on fire and their stomachs craving for more. They all had one thing in common: An adventurous spirit and an insatiable craving for spicy food.

Ang Hang was an instant hit back then. Its owner, Larry J. Cruz, aka LJC, was as usual ahead of his time. He established the trendsetting Café Adriatico in Malate just a few years earlier, and Bistro Remedios, also in Malate, about the same time as Ang Hang.

To put things in their proper perspective, back in the early 1980s, the dining scene was as not as exciting as it is now. Malls were unheard of then. There were no Thai or Indian restaurants yet, and spicy cuisine was something very new to Filipino taste buds, except perhaps to Bicolanos. Ang Hang was in a way a pioneer of today’s specialty restaurants that has become de rigueur nowadays.

Now, two decades later, due to insistent demand from LJC’s unshakable loyal followers, Ang Hang restaurant has been brought back to life, this time at the very heart of Malate where it all began 25 years ago. Ang Hang is a restaurant that serves a variety of Asian dishes for the spice lover and the adventurous at heart. The interiors have bold colors splashed on walls and adorned with different objects from Asia. Do have a glass of "Tea-Liling" (brewed Shanghai Jasmine tea with honey); its deliciously refreshing.

For starters, we had a creamy coconut soup with slivers of pork which just had the right kind of spiciness. In the salad & appetizers section, I feasted on the fried (or baked?) chicken wings which was again spicy but not so much. I also liked the mushrooms with all the peppers and what seemed like a combination of kangkong and pako salad beautifully arranged in Chinese-style soup spoons .

For the main course, I had nasi goreng; the Chicken Ang Hang submerged in peppers and a hot & sour sauce; the beef hofan; and the beef ribs rogan josh which is a take off from the traditional Indian stew made from lamb. My dessert discovery was a the round-shaped fried custard whose Indian name I forgot now. For an additional P100, guests may include the lechon tandoori in their menu but I tried this before and the skin was not so crispy.

On the day we dined at Ang Hang, a busload of Thai tourists had reservations. They constantly took photos of the attractive buffet table and helped themselves to generous servings of the tasty food. Like them, we enjoyed the visual and gustatory stimulation, and were pleasantly surprised that none of the dishes were extremely hot. We were perhaps like some local diners who link the name of the restaurant with hot food. "Anghang," after all, is the Filipino word for hot and spicy, associated with flaming hot chili peppers and burning sensations. The food at Ang Hang could be "hot" indeed, but only in the colloquial sense that the word is used.

After dining at Ang Hang you will definitely feel that you will want more. So try it out its really HOT.

Amoroma

This is one small unknown restaurant in Alabang, which serves authentic Italian cuisine, great service—but believe it or not, there were only six tables! The place is always packed, and so you will ask yourselves why no one knew about this place, because of its location of course. It is tucked away in the back of one of the buildings along Salcedo Street in Makati. It’s on the ground floor, but only the sign can be seen from the street. As for the parking situation, it’s hit or miss, at best. If you are lucky, one of the pay parking spaces along the street will be vacant. I don’t think this bothers many of its patrons though, because they probably just walk over from one of the surrounding office buildings.

The menu is simple and straightforward. A popular appetizer is the Bomboloni, piping hot mini pita-like bread with a veriety of filling -- eggplants, pepperoni, zucchini, mushrooms, all pickled in vinegar and preserved in oil. The bread, which melts in the mouth, is baked at the premises. Amoromoa also makes its own pasta, the quality of which is so excellent, it hardly matters what sauce one orders it with. The 2 best pasta are fettucini with porcini mushrooms and salsiccia, a type of fresh Italian sausage. A chunky tomato sauce, rather than a cream sauce, was the base. The flavors were hearty and earthy. The sort of pasta I would eat when I am hungry and tired. The second pasta dish was another house specialty—Ravioli al Tartufo. Like the fetuccine, the ravioli was handmade, nice and large, with a nice chewy bite. They are stuffed with ricotta cheese and spinach, and served literally smothered with porcini mushrooms, some black truffles, and Parmesan cheese. While still hearty and “down home,” the flavors are little more sophisticated than the first pasta. It was just a little too salty for my taste.

Pizza Amoroma is the house specialty, so we tried that, although I’m actually more of the tomato and basil, or pepperoni pizza type of person. The house specialty is topped with Italian black truffles, shiitake mushrooms, and oregano. The combination of truffles and shiitake mushrooms gives the pizza an earthy taste. The crust was thin and puffy around the edges, just the way I like it. And there was a nice little sheen of oil glistening over the entire pizza, from the generous amount of cheese. I will definitely go back to try one of the plainer pizzas next time.

So now that you know the Manila’s Best Kept Restaurant Secrets for Italian foods, why don't you head out and taste it for yourself.

Almon Marina Deli and Sandwich Bar

Almon Marina a sandwich bar and deli, a casual dining restaurant that serves grill, international, european style gourment sandwiches is one of those "safe pick" restaurants that I can recommend, you can always order either the Fish and Fries or the Almon Marina special (which is a tuna sandwich, for short). The usual dish is the Roast Chicken with the special barbecue sauce, and i bet the recipe of the latter is locked up in a safe somewhere, it's that good.
The crowd favorite -- and very good Roasted Chicken served with pilaf and coleslaw P137, when served it looked perfect. It was not fully dried. You can see the barbecue sauce evenly distributed in the chicken. specks of pepper are always good point when it comes to grilled food. What I liked about the way this chicken was cooked was that the meat was falling out of the bone in very little effort. There was no sign of blood which means that this was cooked perfectly. It makes my mouth water just thinking about it. There is also the tasty Seafood kebab P146, Spaghetti P140 with a generous cut of sausage at the side, and a sometimes too-fatty Callos P155 (stewed ox stripe).

For the soup I suggest you get whatever soup's available. Usually there are only 2, and the vats of each are placed beside the counter so that diners can choose as they order. I usually pick the clam chowder.
The semi self service setup asks customers to order and pay at the cashier. After doing so, one's order is brought by a food server. Waiting time is minimal and service is good. They accept cash or credit card.
